Met Gala 2025 - what can we expect?

Fashion Super Bowl as one might call it - The Met Gala is 4 months away and we already have our theme.

When most people hear the Met Gala, they usually think about celebrities walking the red carpet in outrageous outfits.

Close enough but it’s actually an annual fundraiser for The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute that’s been going on for over 70 years. Every first Monday of May, we are presented with designers sharing their own vision of a presented theme to raise money. Which leads us to another question.

How do we get the theme?

The Met Gala marks the opening night of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibit, which sets the tone for the event. This year the exhibition is Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, inspired by Monica L. MIller’s book “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity”. Where she explores fashion as a way of personal transformation.

The Museums presents us with a collection of clothes, art, history and photos. It is divided into 12 sections to showcase the style of Black dandies from the 18th century to now.

What does this mean for fashion?

The dress code for 2025 is «Tailored for You». Obviously, it directly relates to the exhibition or more specifically menswear but leaves the perfect room for personal style.

What can we expect?

Last time we got a theme dedicated to menswear was in 2003 - “Bravehearts: Men In Skirts” so I’m sure in 2025 we can expect the same groundbreaking fashion or at least the end of boring black suits.

To get the idea for outfits, let’s dig into the topic a little more. A dandy is a man who embodies the essence of classiness, elegance and opulence, when it comes to both physical appearance and personal style. So the theme represents men’s fashion at its boldest - prints, hats, glasses, glows, cloth suits, plaid ties. It’s the era of taking up space and being unapologetically yourself. Not being afraid of colors, accessories, mixing and matching styles.

The inspiration can be drawn from archive photos, movies, literature and also the well known fashion icons.

André Leon Talley.

Creative genius, according to many and a big name in the industry. He was a fashion journalist and passed away in 2022 at the age of 73. However, a lot can be learned from his style. It screams colors and matching the unmatched.

Billy Porter.

American actor and singer. He is known for quite bold outfits, however this year that’s exactly what we need.

Colman Domingo.

American actor and a director, who impresses everyone with his looks. He isn’t afraid to experiment which explains why he is one of the Co-chairs at the Met Gala this year along with Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, LeBron James and of course Anna Wintour herself.

Since the theme is “Tailored for you” we think we’ll be hit with a lot of interpretations, which can include extravagant shapes, jewelry pieces and accessories. Here the inspiration can be drawn from Schiaparelli.

Maison Schiaparelli cultivates this incredible heritage, offering women of the 21st-century the essence of a bold style and timeless allure. In their recent collections “The Phoenix” and “Icarus” we can see a lot of play with shapes, which is truly captivating and looks like it’s been in fact tailored for you

This year’s Met promises to be interesting and we can expect a lot of impressive outfits. So don’t miss out on the biggest fashion celebration on May 5th.
