Tropea, Calabria - Locals Holiday Spot

Calabria is not yet as popular as other southern destinations of Italy and is believed to be a vacation destination for locals. It is, however, equally beautiful and charming as the famous spots. Join Magpaper as they explore sunny Tropea.

Tropea is a little seaside town located on the cliff top overlooking Santa Maria dell’Isola Church and beautiful seaside. It is famous for the stunning beach views and red onions (you will see those pretty much everywhere). Calabrian red onions are sweet and are even possible to eat as they are.

Tropea is a typical beach town and is exactly what you would expect a South of Italy would be. You find lots of restaurants with fresh seafood, gelaterias and pasticceria, aperitivo spots and souvenir shops.

The beach is easily accessible by foot by going down the stairs. Going back up will be less pleasurable but can count as a workout for all the carbs the Italian holiday brings :)

There are multiple beach spots you can choose from. Couple of free options where you can settle with your own towels and umbrella or lidos (Italian version of a beach club). At lidos you can pay for a beach bed with an umbrella and have an option to order drinks and food to your spot, and also have facilities such as a bathroom and changing rooms. Beaches are sandy and comfortable if you opt for a free option, and have a beach bar around to get drinks and snacks.

The water is pristine clean and transparent, has a beautiful turquoise color and is a delight to swim in

During sunset we highly recommend going to Belvedere Piazza del Cannone for a breathtaking view over the Tyrrhenian sea.

Some days local artisans join for a street market that is also a flea market where you find interesting gems. In the best Italian tradition during dinner time you will meet lots of people dressed up going to enjoy their meal or sit at one of the cafes at piazza and peoplewatch

Tropea is perfect for a relaxed time of a beach vacation with good food and evening aperitivo.

We have a list of places we particularly enjoyed during our visit:

Bar La Novità - Corso Vittorio Emanuele, 22, 89861 Tropea VV, Italy

A place to get a morning espresso or an afternoon gelato break. They have fresh sfogliatelle (crispy ricotta pastry originating in Campania region) and excellent pistacchio cornetos (Italian version of croissant). You can also try the Italian summer classic - gelato in brioche or granita (a version of shave ice).

Ristorante La Lamia - Largo Vulcano, 6, 89861 Tropea VV, Italy

Romantic spot perfect for a date in a secluded space. Menu has local dishes and you may want to try something with the famous Calabrian red onion or nduja (spicy spread this region produces).

Tamarindo - Piazza Vittorio Veneto, 7, 89861 Tropea VV, Italy

Aperitivo spot with excellent drinks selection, groovy music and friendly staff. Together with your drinks you also receive a plate of local snacks which is common in Italy but this place was particularly nice :)

Gelati Tonino - Corso Vittorio Emanuele, 50, 89861 Tropea VV, Italy

Gelato establishment where you can meet old signore Tonino serving ice cream with a big smile. The place became famous for offering unconventional gelato flavors such as red onion, nduja or tuna. The place also has traditional flavors but if you are feeling adventurous, give it a try ;)
