Step Into the Singular World of Jana Horejšová
Fresh off her recent showcase at Paris Fashion Week, Jana Horejšová brings a breath of fresh perspective to Magpaper with her latest collection, ON THE BOAT – SINGULARITY 2. This much-anticipated line captivated Paris with its innovative blend of minimalism and bold design, drawing attention to Jana's unique approach to sustainable fashion. In this exclusive interview, Jana delves into the creative journey behind her brand, shares her aspirations for the future, and offers a glimpse into the personal vision fueling her evolving aesthetic.
1. Tell us about ON THE BOAT brand, and how it all started?
It all started seven years ago when during maternity leave I decided not to go back to work (traditional Chinese medicine therapist) but want to start working creatively. I founded the brand ON THE BOAT. I am very close to clothes design, I spent a lot of time studying technology and also worked in the clothing industry for years after school. For the first two years the brand had mainly basic organic certified clothing, sweatshirts, sweatpants, T-shirts. However the Big boom occurred when I also started upcycling three years ago.Since then the brand has moved into the fashion sphere and has been successful in it ever since.
2. You recently had your collection SINGULARITY presented at the Paris Fashion Week (congratulations!), what was your inspiration behind the collection?
My new collection was mainly inspired by the issue of plastic waste. This issue has very alarming numbers. The brand has been dealing with this issue for seven years as part of clean up actions on the Canary Islands and in the Czech Republic. In the beginning the brand supported and organized clean up events with the clean ocean project on the Canary Islands. This time we raised this issue awareness by sewing the plastic directly onto the clothes.
3. What was your overall Paris Fashion Week experience?
Very positive. I had a great team with me: Radka Pavlovčinová, Adam Pavlovčin, Lucie Desmond and my husband. For me the whole fashion week was actually relaxation, comfort, professional realization and a lot of laughter. The whole concept was in my hands, whether it was the creation of models or choosing people who traveled with me to Paris. PFW Flying Solo (the organization that invited Jana) were very professional so everything that was agreed on was arranged accordingly. So it was actually a piece of cake.
On the Boat is a rather progressive fashion brand. What do you think is the future of fashion?
If the fashion industry stopped now, then everyone on the planet would still have something to wear for 100 years :) That’s how many clothes we have in the world.
I see fashion as an expression of my inner self. Clothing is also primarily to protect the body from the winter and, of course, we don’t want to walk around naked :) But if I could express my inner self using dead stock material, or the latest new fashion collection, then it is definitely dead stock material and upcycling.
I think that in the future more people and brands will think like that. We are in a state where it is the only possible way to maintain existence on earth as we know it. This revolution must occur not only in fashion but also in other areas. It’s happening but slowly, hopefully not too slow :).
Any exciting plans in the near future for the On the Boat?
I would very much like to connect with a big brand that would like to take responsibility and instead of burning unsold clothes, it would upcycle them in collaboration with me. In the new year I will be presenting at the spring or autumn MBPFW. It is possible that I will also participate in a Designblok, during these months I will be collaborating with Ploom, we will soon have a sleepover event. I will be upcycling clothes with fashion influencers. I am excited to show them and their followers how it’s possible to transform old into new.
