Beyond a Flower Shop, a Whole Farm in Bloom: KYTKY OD POTOKA

For our MAGPAPER floral series, we’re bringing you something special – not just a flower shop, but a full-fledged flower farm. Just outside Prague, you’ll find Kytky od potoka, a place built on the motto #bezchemie (“without chemicals”). Here, sustainability and local growing are always the top priorities – and you can feel that every detail carries a deeper meaning.

The woman behind the project is Míla Hilgertová, who not only creates stunning bouquets and floral decorations for weddings and events, but also leads flower workshops where you can learn how to work with blooms yourself. And if you’d like to dive even deeper into the world of flowers, her blog is a must-read – from stories about life on the farm to tips on flower care and easy-to-grow varieties you can plant at home.

Do you remember the very first moment you thought: “I want to work with flowers”?

About 11 years ago, I started experimenting with growing them in our field. Over time, local flowers completely captivated me with their natural beauty.

Do you have a favorite seasonal flower that you would love to include in every bouquet? Why that one?

Each month feels different here. We grow around 100 types of flowers. In spring, I love double tulips and ranunculus. After them come the peonies, and from mid-summer through autumn, I absolutely adore dahlias.

At Kytky od potoka, flowers are more than just decoration – they’re a philosophy of life, rooted in care for the earth and joy in simple beauty.

Which flower, in your opinion, best represents this summer – and what about autumn?

I wouldn’t say there’s just one. For us, summer is all about variety – snapdragons, dahlias, cosmos, zinnias, and many more.

What are your favorite types of commissions? What makes them so special?

My true love is weddings – flowers there reflect love and hope. But we also decorate all kinds of corporate events. And I especially enjoy workshops, because I get to see firsthand how much joy local flowers bring to people.

Do you collaborate with other local growers – and why is that important to you?

We are a flower farm, so we mainly use what we grow ourselves. But yes, we do collaborate with other growers and work to develop this sector together.

Where do you look for inspiration when creating new arrangements – in nature, fashion, art…?

Without a doubt, the biggest inspiration comes directly from the flowers themselves and from nature.

How do you see flowers as connected to a slow lifestyle?

Locally and ecologically grown flowers can truly reconnect you with nature. They carry a beautiful life energy within them, which opens the door to a slower, more mindful way of living.

At Kytky od potoka, flowers are more than just decoration – they’re a philosophy of life, rooted in care for the earth and joy in simple beauty. Whether you visit the farm, join a workshop, or simply bring home a bouquet, you’re not just holding flowers – you’re holding a piece of nature that inspires us to slow down, breathe, and live more mindfully.
